How do I migrate quizzes from Blackboard to Brightspace?

Updated on

It is recommended to only migrate existing quizzes from Blackboard to Brightspace if they are very basic or have a significant number of questions. Some quizzes are best made from scratch, which will save you time altering the quiz after importing.

Download quizzes from Blackboard

Downloading a quiz with questions:

  • Navigate to the Control Panel of your Blackboard course.
  • Click Course Tools.
  • Click Tests, Surveys and Pools.
  • Click Tests.
  • Click the fold-out arrow behind the name of the quiz and select Export to Local Computer.

Downloading questions from a pool:

  • Navigate to the Control Panel of your Blackboard course.
  • Click Course Tools.
  • Click Tests, Surveys and Pools.
  • Click Pools.
  • Click the fold-out arrow behind the name of the pool and select Export to Local Computer.

Upload a Quiz in Brightspace

  • Navigate to Course Tools in the navbar of your course.
  • Click Course Admin.
  • Click Import/Export/Copy Components.
  • Click Import Components and then Start. Now upload the desired file.
  • If your file only contains the quizzes you want to import, click Import All Components.
  • If your file contains differentiated content, click Advanced Options to select which parts of the file you would like to import; select where you want to place the file within the course; select what should be done when certain components are similar to already existing files within the course; choose whether or not you want to import your metadata as well.
  • In this example we will explain Advanced Options.
  • It might take a few minutes to upload your package. Do not close the page or browser.
  • Click Continue.
  • Click Continue.
  • In this step you can specifically select which components you want to import.
  • You are able to tick/untick all boxes and select individual items to import. You can select the individual items in the next step.
  • You are also able to overwrite / not overwrite existing files, Import metadata, Offset all dates of imported components.
  • Click Continue
  • Click Expand All to easily see the underlying components.
  • Select which components you want to import. In this example you are able to select this in a following screen for the Question Library, Quizzes and Surveys.
  • An overview of the components you are about to import is shown. You can modify or go a step back if you need to alter something.
  • Click Continue.

After successfully importing your components, you will be redirected to Content.

The quizzes you just imported are not yet linked to any content of the course. Please refer to the Article How do I add a quiz to content? to learn more.

You may also manage your quizzes by going to Course Tools in the navbar of your course and click on Quizzes. Please refer to the article How do I use quizzes? to learn more.

Importing Quizzes with question pools

Some quizzes in Blackboard will have made use of question pools in order to randomize the questions in a quiz per topic. Brightspace supports this functionality as well. However, even though Brightspace will generate the right amount of random question sections, it will not recognize which question section to use for each question pool. This means you'll have to manually assign the appropriate question section to each random question pool.

If you've imported all quiz files correctly, you can now start assigning the questions to these random sections manually. You can do this by:

  • Clicking the question pool (e.g. 'Random Section' #2797367_1 in the screenshot above).
  • Clicking the Browse Question Library button
  • Selecting the question section, you want to use for this question pool
  • Clicking the Save button

If done correctly your screen should look like this:

It is recommended to name your question pool after the topic of your question, to avoid confusion and any errors you might make. It's required to assign all question sections to each question pool manually.
