How can I experience my course as a student?

Updated on

This article aims to explain the purpose and advantages of the "Test Student" function. During the process of designing your course, you sometimes want to view or experience your course from the perspective of a student. This enables you to check if everything is working as it is supposed to and if you are satisfied with the layout of your course. To view the course from the perspective of a student, refer to this article about the Student view. To actually experience the course as a student, you can use a Test Student: a fictional student that you can add to your course and then impersonate to be able to experience your course as a student.

After adding a Test Student to your course, every teacher could enter your course as a student if they Impersonate the same Test Account, for as long as it is enrolled in your course. When impersonating the test account you are able to see every course that the test account is enrolled in. Please consider carefully if this could be a problem for you and if so: don't add the test account to your course. We recommend to remove the test account from your course after you have used it.

Using the Test Student: enrolling

In order to use the Test Student, you need to enroll a test student account to your course.

  • Firstly, go to Classlist
  • Click Add particants and select Add existing users
  • Search for Haagse Test Student. There are three available accounts: Gilbert Haagse Test Student,               Rob Haagse Test Student and Madelon Haagse Test Student. They have the exact same permissions.
  • Select the Haagse Test Student role for the account(s) you want to add
  • Check the box in the first column to select the account
  • Scroll down and select Enroll selected user
  • As soon as the Test Student has been added to your course, you will see it in the course Classlist with Haagse Test Student as its assigned Role.

Searching for "Haagse" is the quickest way to find the Test accounts.

Impersonating the Test Student

In the Classlist, search for the Test Student account.

  • Click the fold-out arrow of the Test Student.
  • Click Impersonate.
  • After selecting Impersonate, you will now be able to start experience the course as a student. This               allows you to enroll in groups, hand in assignments or review the release conditions.
  • After clicking on Impersonate, you will see the following notification:
  • Click Yes

You are now using a Test Student. In the top-right corner of the screen, you can see the Test Student is being impersonated. You are now able to do everything a student can do, such as handing in assignments or enrolling in groups.

It is not possible to use the Test Student for testing notifications as you can not access the mailbox of the account

End your test with the Test Student

  • In the top-right corner of the screen, click "X" next to the name of the account.

It is not possible to Impersonate real students or Instructors. You can give them the Haagse Test Student role, but when clicking the Impersonate option you will receive a message that this is prohibited.
