This sub-privacy statement applies to the processing of personal data in Brightspace and should be read in conjunction with the privacy statement of De Haagse Hogeschool.

Brightspace sub-privacy statement for students of The Hague University of Applied Sciences  

The Hague University of Applied Sciences attaches great importance to your privacy. We strive to make our services as transparent, personal and reliable as possible. The processing of personal data in the Brightspace online learning environment takes place in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (AVG). In this sub-privacy statement, we inform you about how we handle your personal data within Brightspace, for what purposes and on what bases this is done, how your personal data is processed and stored and for how long, what rights you have if your personal data is processed and where to go with questions or complaints about your privacy.

Purposes of processing

The Hague University of Applied Sciences processes your personal data in Brightspace to create an online collaboration and learning environment. This enables proper support for education and enhances the learning and user experience of students and lecturers. The sub purposes include:

  • managing subjects within Brightspace including classifying students into groups;
  • informing students about the content of courses, lectures, seminars and assignments;
  • making course material available and providing support ;
  • testing knowledge and measuring progress;
  • promoting positive interactions between teachers and students;
  • promoting cooperation between students ;
  • recording findings and results by teachers ;
  • improving the activities of the college detecting and preventing fraud (plagiarism) ;

What personal data are processed?  

The following personal data are processed in Brightspace:

  • first name, surname, e-mail address and student number;
  • photo if you choose to upload it; uploading is optional and you can delete the photo at any time. By uploading your photo, you give The Hague University of Applied Sciences permission to handle that photo; By uploading your photo, the photo is visible to your fellow students and lecturers;
  • preferences you have set: email address for receiving messages, receiving a summary of your activities, updates about activities, announcements, assignments, content, discussions, portfolio, grades and quizzes, and options for notifications and excluding certain courses from notifications ;
  • information about the courses you have registered for;
  • assignments to be completed, deadlines of assignments, grades obtained ;
  • feedback from lecturers or fellow students;
  • contributions to discussion forums. Please note that even deleted posts can still be viewed in the context of review by authorised staff members ;
  • Data on participation and progress, such as grades obtained, progress in terms of task lists and class progress;
  • IP address.

Basis for processing your personal data  

Personal data are processed on the following bases:

  • performance of the (study) agreement
  • legitimate interest (Article 6.1f AVG) for data processing activities related to courses, including plagiarism checks.

Who has access to your data?  

Access to data depends on the user's role and the nature of the data.  For example, a forum post may be visible to all students in a particular seminar group, while other data such as final grades are covered by stricter access. Data may be visible to:

  • other students (limited to specific cases such as forum discussions);
  • staff responsible for preparing, setting up groups and managing courses;
  • staff providing support to lecturers and students;
  • head teachers responsible for courses in Brightspace;
  • lecturers who teach the course;
  • college employees who conduct research with the aim of improving teaching and learning materials.  

To whom do we provide your personal data?  

THUAS/ De Haagse Hogeschool has entered into a processing agreement with the supplier of Brightspace which also obliges the supplier to comply with the AVG.  

How is your data stored?

Your data is stored on secure servers, and appropriate technical and organisational measures are taken to protect your data against loss, unauthorised access and other forms of unlawful processing.

How long do we keep your data?  

Your personal data will be archived once you have completed or stopped your studies. Certain personal data, such as assignments, are kept longer for future accreditation's.  

Plagiarism checks  

Submitted assignments such as essays and practical assignments are checked for plagiarism. Immediately after submission, the text is compared with other texts, including previously submitted assignments. However, the final assessment of your assignment lies with the teacher.  

What rights do you have under the AVG and how can you exercise these rights?  

You have several rights under the AVG with regard to the processing of your personal data including:

  • Right of inspection.
  • Right to oblivion (right to deletion).
  • Right to rectification or completion.
  • Right to data portability.
  • Right to restriction of processing.
  • Right to object.

Complaints

If you have a question or complaint about the processing of your data by The Hague University of Applied Sciences, please contact the Privacy Officer first via [email protected]. Of course, you can also (afterwards) contact the Data Protection Officer via e-mail ([email protected]) or by telephone (06 1483 3655). If you are not satisfied with the University of Applied Sciences' handling of your complaint, you can submit a complaint to the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens).
