Students and teachers currently do not need to use the MFA to log into Brightspace, (they do need the MFA to log into Sharepoint). This article is mainly written for guest accounts.
What is the Multi-Factor Authenticator?
The Multi-Factor Authenticator (MFA), also known as Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), is an authentication method that requires you to go through an extra step to log in for extra security.
An overview of the steps
- Download the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone from the app store/play store.
- Use a PC/laptop when you register for the first time.
- Go to www.office.com
- Login to Office using your THUAS login details.
- Confirm your phone number in the MFA app.
Download the MFA app
Register at Office
Open your browser and go to: www.office.com. Click on Sign In. Then first enter your THUAS account (that's [email protected]). Then you will be redirected to the THUAS page. Fill in your login details and click on Register.
Then, you will get the notification that more information is required. Press Next. The next screen refers to the MFA App, download the app if you have not already done so, then click Next again.
Then, the next screen will display "Set up your account", click Next. Next, you will see a QR code appear, open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device. (Do not scan this example).
Instructions for the app
Once you have downloaded the app, click on the + sign in the top right corner:
Choose the option "Work or school account":
Then choose "Scan QR code" and scan the displayed QR code from your computer screen. If all goes well, you will see that the account has been added in the MFA app:
Continue on the computer and press Next. The next screen shows the setting being checked:
Approve the notification on your mobile device. On the computer, you will then see that the notification has been approved. Press Next again.
Confirming your phone number
On the next screen, the registration will proceed by setting up a phone number. You need to set the phone number in case the app does not work. Please enter your phone number and press Next
You will receive a text with a code, enter this code and choose Next.
You will then see confirmation (on your computer) that the phone has been registered. Press Next. Then you will see confirmation that everything is set up correctly. Press Done.
As of now you have activated the MFA, when you will log in, you will receive a push notification on your phone.
