Create a Quiz
Use Quizzes to make tests: you can create formative assessments and set them to be evaluated automatically. For summative assessments, please use Remindo (or Möbius).
- Navigate to Course Tools in the navbar of your course.
- Click Quizzes. You will land on the quiz homepage.
- Click New Quiz.
- Fill in a title for your quiz.
- Click Grade Out Of if you want to assign a numerical grade to this quiz. When you click on Not in Grade Book, you have the option to:
- Add this quiz to your Gradebook, which means that the Grade will automatically appear there.
- Categorize your quiz by assigning it to a Grade Item (For example: Quizzes Semester 1). Here you can link the quiz to a pre-existing Grade Item, or you can create a new one.
- Click Add Existing/Create New to add new questions.
- Fill in a description/introduction if you want to.
- (Optional) Availability Dates & Conditions. Here you can:
- Indicate a Start and End Date.
- Add or remove Release Conditions.
- Manage Special Access for students who require a little more time.
- Set up a password so only those with the password can access the quiz.
- Manage IP restrictions so that only students with a certain IP address can access this quiz.
-
Timing & Display. Here you can:
- Manage the amount of time students have to finish the quiz.
- Decide whether the timer of the quiz starts when a student begins the quiz or when a start date for the quiz has been reached.
- Decide whether a quiz is automatically submitted if a student exceeds the time limit.
- Choose whether students can see all the questions at once, or only one at a time.
- Shuffle the questions so that each student gets a randomized set of questions.
- Indicate whether you want hints to be allowed by ticking the box (hints are created per question, but they have to be enabled here. This is useful when you are importing questions that (could) have hints attached to them).
- Indicate whether you want to disable the right mouse button: this makes it harder for students to print out the quiz questions.
- Indicate whether you want the e-mail and instant messaging functionalities of Brightspace to be turned off when students are participating in a quiz.
-
Attempts & Completion. Here you can:
- Pick how many times students can attempt this quiz.
- Under Notification Email fill in an email address if you want to receive notifications of completed quiz attempts (separate multiple addresses with a comma).
-
Evaluation & Feedback.Here you can:
- Choose whether you want the results of the quiz to be published automatically upon completion. NB: This is only possible when the quiz does not contain any open questions.
- Synchronize to Grade book. NB: This setting can only be used when the quiz is connected to the Gradebook.
- Whether you want students to see their grade upon completion, and if they can see:
- No questions at all.
- Only the questions they got wrong, with the right answers.
- Only the questions they got wrong without the right answers.
- All questions including all the right answers.
- All questions, but without the right answers.
- Here you can also customize the display screen.
- Click Save and Close to return to the quiz homepage.
Go back to your Quiz overview to see the Statistics. The Statistics Tab can be used to generate a quiz report. This helps you to share quiz data easily with those who do not have access to the Quiz statistics page with their Brightspace role (privileges).
Adding questions
Please note that the screen above is only shown if your quiz is still empty.
There are two ways to add questions: either you Add Existing or you Create New.
If you wish to add existing questions, for example from your Blackboard course, you can either Upload a File or Browse from your Question Library. Note that the latter is only available when you have already added questions to your Brightspace course.
In order to upload a file, you must ensure that the file fits the recommended CSV template. You can download an example in the upload screen. Once you've ensured that the file is in order, all you have to do is browse and upload.
If you wish to add questions through the question library, then you will be brought to this screen. Here you can search for a specific question, filter by question type, and sort the questions by alphabet or points. Once you've found the question(s) you wish to add, tick the box next to the question and click on Import. You can choose whether you want the question to appear at the top of the question list, at the bottom, or in a specific section.
Under Create New, you can:
- Create a new question. Please refer to this article for the different types of questions you can add to a quiz.
- Click on Section to add a Section to your quiz.
- Click on Question Pool to add a Question Pool.
Click on Save and close to return to the quiz homepage.
Question options
For each question you can set several options. We will demonstrate this with a Multiple Choice question, as shown below. Please note that similar options are also available for other type of Questions.
On the left you will see your question settings and on the right you will see a preview of the question, highlighted in orange.
- Here you can select the type of question.
- In this field you can type the Question Text and add pictures if needed.
- Under option you can:
- Add standard feedback per answer.
- Add a hint.
- In the example above, we have added hint. Do not forget to turn hints on, in case you want to use hint!
- Add a short description.
- Add custom weights to answers.
- Add enumeration to the answers.
- Add the answers.
- The points the student can receive if he/she answers it correctly.
- Hit Save to save the question.
If you click on the arrow next to save, you'll have the option to save and copy this question. This might come in handy if your next question is similar and should have the same settings.
It is also possible to add a rubric to a “Written Reponse” question.
Adding more questions
- After you have added your first question you will see the screen above.
- Proceed to add more questions / sections / question pools by clicking on Add Existing or Create New.
- Finally, you will see the total number of points in the quiz on the right.
If you select one or more questions by clicking the boxes on the left, the screen above will be visible. This way, you can move a series of questions to the top or the bottom of the Quiz or move them to a pre-made section.
Create a quiz with randomized questions
It is possible to create a quiz in Brightspace such that for a randomized set of questions is generated for every student.

- Click on New Quiz.
- Add a name for your quiz.
- Click on Add/Create Questions.
- Click on Add.
- Click on Question Pool.

- Set up the amount of questions a student has to answer.
- Set up the points for correct answered questions. Note: every question in the Question Pool is worth the same points, independent of settings for the individual questions.
- Click on Browse Question Library.
- Select the question you want to add to the Question Pool or the earlier created section and click on Import.
- Click on Save.
- Click on Add to add more questions or question pools.
- After you added all questions, click on Save and Close.
