In this article, we explain how to grade students using the Insufficient/Sufficient/Good scheme.
You may want to grade assignments using Insufficient, Sufficient or Good, but when you create the assignment, you will only see “points.” This article explains how you can still grade students using I/S/G.
Creating the Grade Item
Go to Grades > Manage Grades. Select New and click Item.
Click on Numeric
Enter a name for the item.
Scroll down to Grading
Under Grade Scheme, click: Insufficient/Sufficient/Good
Go to Display Options and configure them as desired.
The Student View setting is particularly important here (since you want to evaluate the student using I/S/G and don’t want the student to see a grade).
- Click Override display options for this item.
- Make sure Points Grade is disabled.
- Grade scheme symbol must be selected.
- Grade scheme color can be set according to your personal preference.
Under Managing View, you can also choose to hide the points from yourself.
- Make sure Points Grade is turned off if you don't want to see the grade in the Grades overview, but only Insufficient, Sufficient or Good
Then click Save and Close!
Creating the Assignment and Linking to the Grade Item
Go to Course Tools > Assignments. Select New Assignment.
- Enter a name for the assignment.
- Under Grade Out Of, select, for example, “10.”
- Under In Gradebook, click Edit or Link to Existing.
Next, click Link to an existing grade item and select the grade item you just created
and click OK
Grading/Assessing
Go to Course Tools > Assignments and click on the assignment you created.
Then, under Users or Submissions, click on the submitted work and start assessing the student.
On the right side of the screen, you’ll see the following:
As you can see, as an instructor, you assign a grade, which is “translated” for the student into an Insufficient, Sufficient or Good. So the student only sees an I/S/G.
Please note that the scale below follows the (Organization Scheme) I/S/G scheme. A 7.4 therefore results in a Satisfactory, and a 7.5 results in a Good.
